Registered Teachers

So, you've arrived in Melbourne and are ready to teach! Now what?

Once you have arrived and registered in Melbourne, you need to get yourself ready for the first day of Casual Relief Teaching. Some items to keep close by or in a daily teaching bag include the following.

  • Box of Tricks: A few activities, games, worksheets appropriate to the year level you are assigned.
  • Water bottle: If you are doing yard duty in the summer, this is crucial. (Included in the Teacher Start Package).
  • Hat: A wide-brimmed hat is necessary for all students and staff to wear at our sun smart schools. (Included in the Teacher Start Package)
  • Pens, Notebook, etc: Keep them handy!
  • Melways: A map book for Melbourne. This is an absolute must! (Included in the Teacher Start Package).

The metropolitan area of Melbourne is close to 4 million people. Although the transit system is quite good, don't underestimate the time it will take when you are new to the city and unfamiliar with the transfers. Once you know your school, make sure you first check out Metlink Melbourne's Website, then verify the route on Google Maps, and always keep your Melways close by!

Social Events

ANZUK offers social events throughout the year! This is a great way to meet the staff and other teachers working with ANZUK. Events are posted on our Facebook page and teachers will be emailed with dates and times.

Travelling Alone?

If you are like many of our international teachers and are a bit nervous about embarking on such a great adventure solo, we can help out! With such great success in 2010, we will be re-creating a site for teachers to meet prior to their departure. This includes teachers travelling in groups as well, since a few familiar faces always makes the transition easier!

Teachers who have registered with ANZUK and are starting to plan their year abroad will be invited to join our Facebook Event for International Teachers arriving in 2011. We encourage you to add your name, departure date, and what you are looking for (roommates, travel friends, drinking buddys, etc). From there, feel free to contact eachother and start connecting!
Meeting people prior to your departure allows you to:

  • Get to know eachother's interests and figure out if you would live well together.
  • See a familiar face when you arrive.
  • Start planning trips early.
  • Book flights on the same dates.
  • Look for accomodation together and save on rent.
  • Have someone to relay ideas with and maximize your time abroad.

Engaging in casual teaching jobs when you are given the best assistance by a teaching agency like ANZUK is as easy as pie. Teaching jobs like being a casual relief teacher with ANZUK mean being legally constrained by the terms and conditions of the agency. It is expected that all hired under the ANZUK domain should be capable of observing the rules and being at par with the agency's qualification benchmark. In addition, once employed with ANZUK, you are expected to carry on a befitting conduct and follow the company dress code. Even if contract stipulations don't discourage, you must furnish the management of ANZUK Education Services agency if you plan on taking casual teaching jobs as added load or extra teaching jobs solicited from colleges or universities that the outfit has presented to you ahead of time.

What Is Needed?

After getting an accreditation for the Victorian Institute of Teaching and securing an evidence of your latest criminal background check, you are now inching towards having a profession in the casual teaching jobs industry. There are just a few more details you must do to if you wish to pursue teaching in the southern hemisphere particularly, Australia.

Like any outsourcing business, the agency adheres to strict company rules on proper work clothes for male and female with casual teaching jobs. Here are some tips in dressing up for success:

  • If you are male, having a wardrobe consisting of collared shirts, polo shirts, and fresh casual khakis will get you ahead in the academic setting. If you are fond of wearing bonnets or caps, you might have to say goodbye to them temporarily because you can't wear them inside the classroom. No sweat pants and or basketball jerseys unless you are teaching PE classes, no torn denims, and most definitely, no g-strings even under extremely hot weather condition.
  • If you are females, having blouses or polo shirts with skirts or plain clothes will also be helpful. You should not be seen wearing any bonnets or caps inside the classroom as well, that is, if you follow teaching jobs rules. Ripped jeans and sporty attires like jerseys should be limited only to those holding PE classes.

These are just very basic dress code ethics you need to observe while still under your casual teaching jobs contract. But a test of being a good follower might also be taken into consideration in assessing your performance so take note of them and don't take them for granted.
