ANZUK Teaching Agency prides itself on honesty, integrity, and a hard work ethic. With these values in mind, we strive to offer you the most informative, straight forward answers to your questions.
What is the purpose of an agency?
ANZUK Teaching Agency finds you work as a teacher once you arrive with a valid work VISA and are registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). When you first arrive in Melbourne, it could take you months to research schools and get your name onto the list of a school’s independent relief teachers. ANZUK can have you teaching the day after you arrive. We function similarly to Canadian School Boards.
What is a CRT?
A Casual Relief Teacher (CRT – sometimes referred to as supply teacher or substitute teacher) is someone that can replace a teacher in a school for the reason of illness, maternity or paternity leaves, contract positions, professional development, etc. Some international teachers choose only to work as a CRT during their year abroad because of the flexibility in travel options. It also allows you to gain valuable teaching experience without having to do excessive planning and marking.
Can I teach in other cities besides Melbourne?
We do not recruit to any other cities in Australia, mainly due to the amount of work available in Melbourne. However, we do recruit to London, England as well.To learn more, visit our pages teach in the UK
What type of teaching positions are available in Melbourne?
ANZUK can offer teachers regular supply work, short term and long term placements, and contract positions. Most teachers begin as supply teachers and may be offered either long term supply work or short term contracts throughout their stay. The Working Holiday Visa restricts Canadians in the length of their contracts. No overseas teacher will be allowed to work for a school for any longer than six months. Because of this, we are not able to offer you a full year contract. Most teachers begin as supply teachers and can be offered either long term supply work or short term contracts throughout their stay. It is not something that can be offered prior to your arrival as no principal is willing to commit to a teacher without first meeting them.
Am I guaranteed a job before I arrive?
Not officially. The requirements to teach with ANZUK are that you have registered with VIT and have a valid work VISA, which we can assist you with. We will be able to offer you supply work under these conditions, but are not able to guarantee you a certain amount per week until you have arrived and worked in our schools.
How much work will I get and is any of it guaranteed?
This will greatly depend on the time of year you arrive and your flexibility as a teacher. You should be willing to travel by public transportation, live in a central location, be flexible on the year levels that you teach, and show an enthusiasm resulting in getting requested by our schools. If this sounds like you, expect to be working 4-5 days per week during terms 2, 3, and 4! Guaranteed work is offered to a select few teachers, but we strive to have all teachers working as much as possible.
What documents does ANZUK need in order to apply?
If you wish to apply to work with ANZUK, please fill out our registration form to the right. Once contacted, you will need to supply your resume, contact information, and 3 teaching references, and a copy of either your teaching degree or academic transcripts.
What is VIT?
The Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registers teachers and grants them permission to teach in the state of Victoria. All teachers must be registered with the VIT prior to teaching with ANZUK. Further information can be found on the VIT Website.
We suggest that teachers commit to a general arrival date and begin gathering paperwork for the VIT application an absolute minimum of 4 months prior to the intended departure date.
How long is the application process?
The application process with ANZUK is much shorter, but cannot be completed unless you are registered with VIT.
Do I need a teaching degree?
Yes. In order to register with the VIT and ultimately with ANZUK, you must have "four years of approved tertiary study, including an approved course of primary or secondary teacher education" as stated on the VIT website.
What type of Visa do I need and must I be hired first?
The large majority of our international teachers arrive on a Working Holiday Visa, which allows you to work in Australia without signing a contract first. ANZUK does not sponsor teachers coming to Australia so you must hold a valid work Visa before entering the country. This Visa is only available to those who are under the age of 31. Please visit the Australian Immigration site for further information and other visa options.
How long can I stay?
The Working Holiday Visa will allow you to stay for up to one year. If you wish to apply for a second Working Holiday Visa, you must meet their specific requirements and complete 3 months of regional work during your first year. Read more about the Working Holiday Visa.
How much do I get paid?
ANZUK continues to have a very competitive pay rate in Melbourne. You are paid $210 gross amount per full day, with 9% superannuation and liability insurance cover on top of your daily amount (equivalent of $240+ per day). You do not pay a commission to ANZUK out of your daily rate.
Do I pay a fee to ANZUK?
Yes. ANZUK has a one-time fee of $150.00 to help get you set up with your paperwork and for the assistance you receive prior to your arrival. Once you register with us in Melbourne, you will receive a Teacher Start Package valued at $150.00 to help reimburse you for the fee and get you set up for your first days of teaching with ANZUK.
Is Melbourne an expensive city to live in?
Living in Melbourne is comparable to living in any major World city. You should expect to pay between $1000 and $1200 AUS per month for all major expenses including rent, utilities, phone, transportation, and food. Considering the daily rate for casual relief teaching, this is easily affordable for most teachers.
Where should I live once I arrive?
The more centrally you are located, the more options you will have for work. It will also cut down your travel times significantly. Suburbs such as Richmond, South Yarra, Southbank, Kensington, and Footscray as well as right in the heart of Melbourne are all great locations which are easily accessible by public transport. It is crucial that you live centrally if you wish to teach 4-5 days per week.
When is the best time to arrive?
Melbourne’s school year is broken up into 4 terms. Terms 2, 3, and 4 are the busiest for supply work.
The term dates for 2011 are as follows:
Term 1: February 1 to April 8
*Term 2: April 27 to July 1
*Term 3: July 18 to September 23
*Term 4: October 10 to December 22
If you are planning on travelling for a full year, an arrival date close to the beginning of Term 2 will be the most beneficial to you in terms of job and financial stability. We encourage teachers to arrive between April and October each year but ultimately the choice is yours.
Do I have to register for the start of a term?
Absolutely not! As a supply teacher, one of the greatest benefits is that you can arrive at anytime of the year. If you arrive part way through a term, we will be able to get you registered and teaching as early as the day after your arrival, provided you have a valid work Visa and have completed the VIT registration.
How long do I have to stay?
The choice is yours! You can stay for a few weeks or up to one year. To maximize your profit, keep in mind that April to October is the busiest time for supply teaching. You do not sign a contract with ANZUK. The agreement that you sign with us is a temporary worker agreement (TWA). It does not bind you to us as a permanent employee. Our TWA governs your placement in the schools we place you in.
Where can I find information on what teaching is like in Melbourne?
Our website has a wealth of information on what to expect in a typical day and expectations for teachers in Melbourne. Visit our Registered Teachers page for further details.
Does ANZUK assist with flights or accommodations?
We do not provide a financial incentive or discounts on flights or accommodations. We do, however, offer loads of advice and assistance and can help you complete these steps!
Do I need a car?
Not at all! Most of our schools are easily accessible by public transport and international travellers will typically rely on public transit available to them for teaching positions. Melbourne has a great transit system and we can offer some resources to help you get comfortable with your daily commute.
Where are your schools located?
We have over 450 schools located in all areas of Melbourne, which is why it is important to live as centrally as possible.
I want to speak with a person. Who should I contact?
If you wish to speak with someone about your travel plans, please visit our Contact page where you can either call or email our representatives.
